BHIVA statement on management of a pregnant woman living with HIV and infant testing during coronavirus (COVID-19): update

Advice from the British HIV Association (BHIVA)

Thursday 2 September 2021

Further to our statement in March 2020, we recommend that monitoring of pregnant women by HIV physicians should revert to routine regular visits as per the 2018 guidelines.

Infant testing (for infants exclusively formula fed) should revert to PCR testing at 0, 6 and 12 weeks, with a final HIV antibody test at 18–22 months of age as per the 2018 guidelines.

Breastfeeding should be supported with monthly maternal and infant viral load follow-up for the duration of the breastfeeding period and for 2 months post-cessation of breastfeeding.
