UK-based specialist registrars, newly-appointed consultants (within the first 5 years of appointment) and non-consultant healthcare professionals (including nurses, pharmacists, clinical and non-clinical researchers) working in the field of HIV, who have a research role and are involved in clinical trials were invited to apply.
The exchange scholarship enabled a winning applicant to travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to take part in a placement at an HIV unit for 1 week. The programme provided a unique opportunity to increase understanding and to gain experience in clinical trials recruitment and processes and, in addition, to obtain an overview of research methods from overseas. Scholars were encouraged to disseminate this information and experience when they returned to the UK.
In exchange, a scholar from Brazil travelled to the UK to take part in a placement at an HIV unit. Winning UK applicants were responsible for organising the placement of the oversees exchange scholar at their hospital and for sourcing suitable accommodation for their stay.
