The British HIV Association (BHIVA) joins the Association of Public Health (ADPH) and Local Government Association (LGA) in calling for a major extension of access to PrEP to help end the epidemic of HIV in the UK. We also share the concerns they express regarding the continuing lack of adequate investment in public health funding, especially in terms of effective prevention strategies.

We are very clear in the 2018 joint BHIVA/BASHH recommendations for the use of PrEP that it is an effective method of protecting those at high risk of HIV transmission. The evidence for the benefits are compelling, for both the individual and for public health. We recommend that the current trial should be rolled out so that access to PrEP is available to all those who need it. NHS England should join other parts of the UK in making PrEP universally available.
