Compliance with these guidelines should be audited both within clinics, and in the UK as a whole. The following questions are recommended as examples for use in clinical audit:
- Does your clinic have an individual/individuals with a specific remit for encouraging/maintaining adherence? (Specify: physician, nurse, pharmacist, psychologist, patient advocate, other)
- Which tools are used for assessing adherence within your clinic?
- Of patients on antiretroviral therapy, what proportion of patients’ notes include an assessment of adherence in the past three months?
- For patients beginning a new antiretroviral regimen, what proportion of patients’ notes include an assessment of adherence within the first month following initiation?
- Of patients on antiretroviral therapy, what proportion have seen another member of the multi-disciplinary team to discuss aspects of their treatment adherence?
- Does your clinic have a written policy on antiretroviral treatment adherence?
