It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Professor Martin Fisher who died last night.

BHIVA expresses its deepest condolences to Martin’s partner Adrian, his friends, family and colleagues.

We shall all miss him greatly.

Professor Martin Fisher was a towering, internationally renowned figure in the field of HIV medicine and sexual health – one of those few individuals who had truly made a lasting impact equally in both fields. His description of the impact of sexually transmitted infections and primary HIV infection on HIV transmission marked him out very early as someone of exceptional talent. He was appointed as a consultant in Brighton in 1995 and for 20 years, led by the savvy appointments of a brilliant clinical and research team, he developed Brighton into one of the leading providers of HIV care in the UK. His ability to build a team will be one of the major legacies that he leaves us.

Martin was a key figure in BHIVA right from the beginning. He served on the BHIVA Executive Committee for over 10 years and was Honorary Secretary but it will be his leadership on different guidelines that really stands out. The HIV testing guidelines, written in 2008, genuinely changed practice, have remained relevant and really only now have needed to be revised. The PEPSE guidelines were equally influential.

Martin will be terribly missed as a friend, as a colleague, as a mentor, as a doctor. Our thoughts go out to his partner, Adrian, his parents and his colleagues in Brighton.
