Malaysian Airlines MH17 tragedy

Friday 18 July 2014

The British HIV Association today expresses its deep shock and sadness at news reports concerning the loss of many of our esteemed colleagues and friends on Malaysian Airlines MH17 flight. At the present time, we understand from a University of New South Wales press statement, that former International AIDS Society president Joep Lange, and his partner Jacqueline were among those lost. We send our deepest condolences to his family and colleagues, and to all those affected by this tragic incident.

Founding Chair of BHIVA, Professor Brian Gazzard, speaking of the death of his friend and colleague Joep Lange, said:
"It is with great sadness that I learnt today of the death of my close friend Joep Lange and his wife in the Malaysian air crash. He was one of the world leaders in antiviral research, he co-founded the HIV-NAT network in Thailand and more recently was influential in many areas of global health and was particularly interested in microeconomics. He will be sadly missed and our hearts go out to his children."
