BHIVA awards a number of conference scholarships to help researchers, community representatives and other delegates attend the BHIVA annual autumn and spring conferences.
Overview of Conference Scholarships

BHIVA Science Scholarships
BHIVA Science Scholarships are awarded to researchers studying for a PhD or MD and who have an abstract accepted for presentation at the annual BHIVA conference in the spring. Up to 10 scholarships are awarded and cover the cost of conference registration fees, and a contribution towards travel expenses and accommodation costs.
BHIVA Community Registrations and Scholarships
BHIVA Community Scholarships are awarded to 10 UK-based community registrants to attend the annual BHIVA conference in the spring. The scholarships cover the cost of conference registration fees and a contribution towards expenses and accommodation costs. In addition, BHIVA also supports the registration fees for approximately 30 community representatives to attend both the spring and autumn conference.
Abbott Travelling Scholarships in collaboration with BHIVA and St Stephen's AIDS Trust
Abbott provide scholarships to practising HIV doctors from resource-poor countries to travel to the UK for training purposes. The objective is to increase their understanding of the treatment and management of HIV and to disseminate this information and experience when they return to their country of origin. All applicants must have a good understanding of English and a demonstrable benefit from attending the conference.
Any UK centre collaborating with overseas hospitals that is willing to support applicants either by providing a letter of recommendation or by supporting a clinical attachment at their centre should enquire about the programme from the Conference Organisers. Candidates will be selected upon approval of their health authorities and a shortlist will be supplied to the Review Committee for the final selection.
Successful candidates will be invited to participate in a training programme, which will run for approximately three weeks and will include a placement at a UK centre, as well as attendance at the Annual Conference of BHIVA.
MSD International Travel Bursaries in collaboration with BHIVA
MSD provide travel scholarships to 10 UK-based newly appointed consultants (within first five years of appointment) and non-consultant healthcare professionals (including doctors, nurses, pharmacists and non-clinical researchers) who are either training or working in the field of HIV medicine. Applicants must be members of the British HIV Association (BHIVA). The value of each scholarship is capped at a maximum of £2,000 and is a contribution towards an award winner’s registration fee, travel and accommodation expenses for the forthcoming Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections.
