Introduction
BHIVA and CHIVA in collaboration with other partners held a one-day national conference to focus on what should be done about HIV testing the children of parents living with HIV and who are attending adult HIV services.
It is believed that this is a very important and urgent issue and that the time is now right to discuss what effective action can be taken at a national level to help reduce the unnecessary and avoidable morbidity and mortality amongst undiagnosed HIV-positive children. It is felt that the number of undiagnosed HIV-positive children can be reduced rapidly by appropriate policy changes and the dissemination of best practice.
BHIVA and CHIVA were delighted to be able to bring together relevant groups and stakeholders to understand the extent of the problem, its underlying causes and consequences, and develop a consensus strategy to overcome barriers to testing and diagnosis in this vulnerable group.
As you will see from the conference programme, specific time was set aside for open discussion and debate in order to define best practice across the sectors and make firm policy recommendations.
