Commenting on new research1 published in The Lancet HIV, BHIVA Chair Dr David Asboe, said: "The prevalence of multiple drug use and condomless sex among MSM, both with or without HIV is of great concern to HIV clinicians, due to the increased risk of HIV transmission, and also transmission of other STIs including Hepatitis C. Recreational drug use is also implicated in debilitating psychological problems, including depression.
"While this research offers some reassurance that only a small minority of MSM who use multiple types of recreational drug are having condomless sex, it provides a timely reminder that all of us working in the HIV field must continue to raise awareness of the issues. Events such as National HIV Testing Week (22-30 Nov) provide us with a useful platform to do so."
