British HIV Association (BHIVA) & British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) call for ban of conversion therapy for trans people

Tuesday 5 April 2022

The British HIV Association (BHIVA) and the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) welcome the Government’s eventual decision to ban ‘conversion therapy’ after all. However, we believe excluding trans people does them, the wider LGBT+ community, and their allies (including BHIVA and BASHH) a grave disservice. We understand that any legislation has complexities but when it comes to something as diabolical as ‘conversion therapy’, the law must protect all people. Trans individuals are at higher risk of acquiring HIV and trans and non-binary people with HIV report a lower quality of life than their cis-gendered counterparts. We stand by other charitable and community organisations in challenging stigma and discrimination against trans people.
